The Unexpected Journey

I never expected golf to become such a meaningful part of our family’s story.

If you had told me a few years ago that we’d spend so much time hitting balls at the range, chipping in the backyard, squeezing in tee times, traveling to tournaments, and walking fairways together, I probably would have laughed. Golf wasn’t part of our everyday life. It wasn’t a sport we planned for our daughter to play or something that would become so woven into our family’s memories.

But sometimes the best stories begin with the smallest, most unexpected moments.

As Clara’s tenth birthday approached, she couldn’t decide what she wanted. Then one day, a random idea popped into my head: golf clubs. Clara had never swung a club or watched golf on TV. She knew that my dad played golf, but that was about the extent of her connection with the sport.

A few days later we found ourselves at Golf Galaxy, letting her try a few clubs to see if she was a righty or a lefty, and whether this is something she would enjoy. Before we knew it, we were walking out the door with the cutest pink and purple starter bag and her very first set of clubs.

Looking back now, I’m surprised we hadn’t considered golf sooner. After all, we live near Pinehurst, North Carolina, the cradle of American golf.

At the time, it felt like a simple birthday gift. We had no idea that one small decision would open the door to countless family memories, lessons far beyond the scorecard, and a journey that would eventually inspire this website.

Follow along as we navigate the ups, downs, surprises, and memorable moments of junior golf. From tournament days to ordinary afternoons on the course, The Diary is where we’re documenting the journey—one round, one lesson, and one memory at a time.
